I will write a short and brief review on Angkor in this following post. Basically there is 3 main must see attraction in Angkor which is Angkor Wat itself, Angkor Thom with its famous Bayon temple and Ta Prohm, the tomb raider-esque temple.
Things can get sweaty from 10:00am onwards and the weather is quite hot and humid. Water is your best ally here so pack some through your journey or if you fancy some fresh coconuts, you can get it at USD 1 from the sellers.
The guide book Ancient Angkor is a MUST BUY! It feature my all time favourite photographer Michael Freeman and some French scholar by the name Claude Jacque. Get it for USD 5; not a dollar more.
Remember to bring along a mask to protect you from the dust; your lungs will thank you for that. It is really dusty around Siem Reap, trust me.
Regarding tuk-tuk, get it from a trusted source. I hired mine through Siem Reap Rooms Guesthouse as I was staying there and the driver was superb and reasonably priced. USD 18 for the whole tour plus sunrise, good value if you ask me.
Be here early to see its stunning silhouette at sunrise. Most photographers will crowd around the northern pool by around 5:30am. If you plan to bring tripod and set-up your camera there, just make sure you arrive there before everyone else does as it get crowded really fast. I mean it!
The best time to visit Angkor Wat are during sunrise and also during the evening around 3:00pm onwards where the setting sun will emit a glowing orange hue upon the majestic Angkor Wat walls.
Remember to wear some decent clothing to enable you to visit the top tier of the temple. The climb up and down can be quite a challenge for those who have the fear of heights. Walking around the outer courtyard surrounding it is highly recommended.
Angkor Thom is one of the largest Khmer cities which consist of a few temple including the all famous Bayon Temple. Usually the Petit Circuit tour will start at the Bayon Temple first. Make your way here early after sunrise when everyone is having their breakfast as it get crowded really fast with tons for tourist arriving by the buses.
The rest of the temple here is not that exciting after visiting Bayon, so take your time.
Ta Prohm, the all time famous Lara Croft temple. Be here early too after sunrise as you need those quite serene time to explore the temple by your own.
The best itinerary is to visit it after a splendid sunrise at Srah Srang on the second day. After that its off to the Big Circuit tour.
